GTCL Drives Record Growth in Canadian Chess Membership

Canadian chess membership has hit a record high, led by significant growth across Ontario and the Greater Toronto area.

According to the annual statistics review published by the Chess Federation of Canada (CFC) as of May 1st, 2026, membership in Ontario has jumped to 2,933 players—an increase of roughly 6.5% over last year's 2,755 members.

The current breakdown includes 1,459 junior, 995 adult, 384 lifetime, 48 family, and 47 honorary members. Notably, while adult memberships dipped slightly from their 2025 peak of 1,052, overall provincial growth was driven by a strong surge in junior participation, which rose from 1,257 to 1,459 players.

GTCL membership has reached approximately 1,613 active players—the highest total on record. The Greater Toronto Chess League (GTCL) was allocated 27 of the 49 CFC voting memberships, representing over 55% of Ontario’s chess-playing population and ensuring strong regional representation at the national level. These representatives will advocate for the GTCL throughout the coming year by participating in quarterly CFC deliberations and casting votes on critical national matters—including host selection for the Canadian Open and Canadian Youth Chess Championship, as well as electing national leadership such as the CFC President.

It is important to note that membership is not required for all CFC rated events. Tournaments with only CFC juniors for instance, typically do not require a chess membership (only a CFC id for tracking ratings), unless the tournament is the Canadian Youth Chess Championship. In addition, any participant can purchase a one-time tournament membership (these are not tracked as full memberships).
