A Greater Toronto Chess League success story: GM-elect Anthony Atanasov

Date Published

We are proud to recognize the accomplishment of one of our own on the biggest stage. At the 2026 World Youth Chess Championship (WYCC) held this past June, IM Anthony Atanasov finished with 9 points of an available 11 to top the U18 section and win the direct-title of Grandmaster. Now, he joins Grandmaster Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux in 2022, as the only other Canadian to win the U18 WYCC—the highest and most prestigious honour in youth chess.

A native of Oakville, GM-elect Atanasov started playing chess in Toronto in 2013 at the Mississauga Chess Club. He soon joined in activities at the Seneca Hill Chess and over the past decade has continued playing throughout the GTCL region clubs: from the annual Hart House Chess Club and Annex Chess Club events to the recently opened Toronto Chess Centre, and many more.

While Anthony’s remarkable achievement is first and foremost a testament to his own talent and dedication, it is also a victory shared by those who supported him along the way—from his family to chess organizers across Canada. Within our local community, the GTCL's organizers, staff, and volunteers are proud to have built an ecosystem where his potential could truly flourish. Below, some of our member clubs share their reflections on his early chess development.

GM‑elect Anthony Atanasov played his first CFC rated game at the Mississauga Chess Club, and we are proud that his competitive journey began within our community. His title reflects the impact that consistent weeknight play, dedicated volunteers, and a strong grassroots environment can have on a developing player. We are even prouder that his achievement demonstrates what GTCL’s local clubs make possible across the region.

From Seneca Hill Chess

Anthony Atanasov's World Youth Chess Champion title is a proud moment for Toronto and everyone who has been part of his chess journey.

Anthony played his first CFC regular rated tournament in the Grand Prix event 2013, organized by Seneca Hill Chess. He returned to compete in all the Grand Prix events for the next six years until it was suspended during the COVID pandemic.

Like many successful players, Anthony's journey began at local tournaments. Through the support of grassroots organizations like Seneca Hill Chess, along with his parents, coaches, and the volunteers at the Greater Toronto Chess League community, he had the opportunity to develop his skills and passion for the game.

Anthony's remarkable achievement is an inspiration to young players everywhere and a reminder that every champion starts somewhere.

We are honoured that Seneca Hill Chess was part of Anthony's early chess journey, and we congratulate him on this remarkable achievement. We look forward to watching his continued success in the years ahead.
